Dry season crowds, wet season bargains, and the one detail that can cancel your Nusa Penida day out - here is when to go and why.
Bali does not have four seasons, just two - dry and wet - and which one you land in changes almost everything about the trip: crowd levels, hotel rates, and whether the boat to Nusa Penida actually runs that day.
Dry season (April-October): reliable weather, rising crowds
This is Bali at its most postcard-perfect - long sunny days, low humidity by tropical standards, and calm seas for the fast boat out to Nusa Penida's cliffs and snorkelling spots. June-August is the busiest and most expensive stretch, overlapping with Australian and European summer holidays, so Ubud's rice-terrace paths and the Kelingking viewpoint get genuinely crowded.
May and September are the sweet spots - the same dry, boat-friendly weather with noticeably thinner crowds and better rates.
Wet season (November-March): short storms, lush terraces, quieter beaches
Rain here rarely means a washed-out day - expect an intense downpour for an hour or two, usually in the afternoon, then clear skies again. Ubud's rice terraces are at their greenest in this window, and Kuta, Seminyak and Nusa Dua are noticeably quieter and cheaper.
The trade-off is the sea: December-February brings the biggest swells of the year, and Nusa Penida boat crossings from Sanur are the most likely to be delayed or cancelled outright when conditions turn rough.
Planning around the Nusa Penida crossing
If a Nusa Penida day trip is the centrepiece of your itinerary rather than a nice-to-have, that alone is a reason to favour the dry season - a cancelled crossing is hard to reschedule inside a short trip. Travellers focused purely on Ubud, Kuta, Seminyak or Nusa Dua have far more flexibility, since none of those depend on a boat.
Bottom line
May, June and September give you dry-season weather and reliable boat crossings without July-August pricing or crowds. If Nusa Penida is not on your list and you would rather trade a few short afternoon showers for lower prices and quieter rice terraces, November and early December are worth a look.
